Cedar Wood: Characteristics and Applications

The Cedar of Lebanon belongs to the Pinaceae family, all very ornamental and majestic plants, among which we find in addition to our Cedar of Lebanon also, the Atlas cedar, the Deodara cedar and the Cyprus cedar.

The thin pink or grayish sapwood differs from the reddish yellow or brown red heartwood with frequent gum-resinous exudations. It has a slightly acrid flavor and when fresh it gives off a pleasant scent of cedar. The heartwood has a medium to coarse texture and frequently intertwined fibers. It has a rather low hardness, moderate durability and modest impact resistance. All mechanical-physical and thermal operations on cedar wood are easy. It is used in the construction and naval sectors, to manufacture furniture, sculptures and cabinet-making works.

From building temples to furnishing interiors

Cedars are ornamental trees introduced in Europe and very common in public parks and gardens, especially in places where the temperature is not very cold. However, they are rustic plants that withstand frosts down to about -25 ° C (the Turkish cedar even down to -30 ° C). They are also grown for their aromatic and hardy wood. Cedar from Lebanon is believed to have been used in the construction of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem. In the Hebrew language it is called EREZ

In traditional archery cedar wood is used for the construction of arrows. At the time of the Phoenicians they were used to build large boats. In fact, also thanks to the presence of the cedar, the Phoenicians have become great traders and navigators. Cedar wood is the most popular wood for making cigar boxes.
