    Furnishing wood: walnut

    National Walnut: Characteristics and Applications

    Lightweight and strong

The European walnut can have a straight but also wavy grain, with a medium texture; sapwood and heartwood are well separated, the first goes whitish while the second has a brown-gray color with even darker shades. This type of walnut dries very well and the specific weight of the wood seasoned in the open air is 600 kilograms per cubic meter.

The typical veins and shades of Italian walnut are its most popular feature in the furniture sector: from furniture to parquet, European walnut is synonymous with elegance and value, if not really luxury. For the same reasons, this type of walnut wood is used in cabinet making, in fine woodworking as solid wood, in the details of furnishing accessories and in the finishing of luxury cars (internal inserts in walnut briar).

The European walnut has been cultivated in the Old Continent since time immemorial but its origins are oriental, to be found in the mountains of southwestern Asia. What we call national walnut is referred to as noyer in France, nussbaum or walnuss in Germany and walnut in Great Britain. In addition to being beautiful to look at, the Indo-European walnut is also easy to work: consistent, hard, slightly less heavy than beech, it is ductile (but not easily bendable), it can be assembled, finished and smoothed without difficulty. In addition, its veins can include all shades of brown up to streaks ranging to gray-black, veins that have the advantage of standing out even more when the piece of furniture ages.

    Uses

Let's start by saying that walnut is a highly stable wood, but at the same time it can be worked very well. Also it is:

    • Medium heavy to heavy
    • Adaptable to the cut
    • Resistant to deformation
    • Easily sandable, paintable and polishable
    • Speaking of the latter quality, walnut allows the polishing waxes to patinate the surface but prevents their penetration into the internal part of the timber. In other words, it is difficult to impregnate.

To the detriment of Juglans Regia (botanical name) we recall, if anything, a certain predisposition to be attacked by woodworms.

As already mentioned at the beginning, this type of wood is used for the production of high quality furniture but also for other purposes.

To give some examples, beyond furnishing solutions, walnut is also used for:

    • Parquet floors
    • Various coverings
    • Articles from the arms sector
    • Dashboards of luxury cars
    • Musical instruments

Finally, the Common Walnut plant (English name) keeps insects such as mosquitoes and flies at a safe distance, and is an excellent "shade provider" for gardens.
