Larch Wood: Characteristics and Applications
The differences between the different varieties can be seen above all in the characteristics of the larch wood. Larch wood that grows at higher altitudes and in areas that have a steep slope, for example, has thin rings. While the one that grows at low altitude has wider rings.
This difference is not only aesthetic, but also functional. In fact, the wide rings of the larch trunk also offer a more durable and resistant wood. For this reason, houses built at high altitudes with "rock" larch wood rarely undergo obvious damage over time.
The larch of the hilly areas has a light and thin sapwood, with a yellow-brown heartwood, tending to an intense red-brown as you go up in altitude. The inner part of the ring changes color according to the season, becoming darker in the late wood.
In detail, what are the characteristics of larch wood and its best qualities:
- excellent resistance, which however varies according to the geographical area of reference;
- good stability, thanks to the hardness of the larch wood which dries well and is easily workable;
- excellent levels of impermeability, which make it an ideal material for the construction of wooden structures, boats and pergolas;
- great versatility, because it is produced in tailor-made strips or boards and can be worked and used for different uses;
- insulating properties, which make it perfect for internal and external coatings;
- essence with an appreciable aesthetic, especially for its natural tendency to take on greyish tones that make it ideal for external cladding;
- high mechanical capacity, due to the resinous heartwood and the durable and compact wood;
- excellent relationship between elasticity and resistance, since the curing and drying process is rather fast and the efficiency of the performance of larch wood makes it similar to the materials used for large buildings.

The European larch - Larix decidua
Larch wood has been used for centuries, since ancient times, also for being a slow-burning product, which maintains its mechanical properties despite the fact that the temperature rises considerably. As regards the use of larch wood, it can be said to be one of the most used materials in the carpentry and construction sector, both for the construction of simple structures and coatings, as well as for boats and bridges.
The fact that it allows simple processing, that it has excellent resistance to shocks and water and that it is also aesthetically appreciable, thanks to its yellow-brown-reddish color, makes it the ideal product for any type of use . Larch wood for exteriors is excellent, but also for interior furnishings and for the creation of design furnishings with a contemporary taste.
In addition, larch is also used for the production of turpentine and tannin, obtained from the resin extracted by etching the tree bark. Thanks to this process, products for polishing furniture and for painting are obtained, as well as essential oils and products for the treatment of dermatitis and wounds. As for the interiors, larch wood is used in its “white” and “gray” variants, but also with other types of colors. In fact, larch can be treated with mordants, impregnating agents, paints and oils to obtain different chromatic yields.
Its use is varied, from furnishing accessories to modern and design furniture, from the creation of windows to doors, bookcases and tables. Furthermore, it is possible to use larch wood for exteriors for the construction of load-bearing structures, gazebos, boats, but also structures that are underground or totally immersed in water. Larch wood becomes more resistant in contact with water and it is also possible not to carry out any type of treatment to protect the surface. The result, in this case, will be a wood that over the years will increasingly take on a greyish hue, particularly appreciated in external coatings.

Calligaro Legnami deals with the sale of solid wood tables, made to measure and made with any wood essence. Each board has its own specific characteristics, but it is always made from carefully selected woods that can guarantee the highest quality and be used for any do-it-yourself project.
Larch wood planks are obtained by cutting selected larch trunks and can be purchased as edged or unedged planks. The former are subjected to the trimming process, which allows the side strips to be removed to obtain regular edges. The former, on the other hand, do not undergo trimming and have an irregular width. These are called "boules".
