Oak Wood: Characteristics and Applications

Lightweight and strong

Oak is undoubtedly the most used type of wood since its characteristics allow it to be used in many contexts. As early as the 13th century, luxury furniture was built with oak because of its elegance and resistance. Even today, oak wood is used for the construction of furniture, ships and barrels for the aging of wines even if its main use is in the building sector. In fact, oak wood is the most used wood for the construction of wooden floors by virtue of its aesthetic, technical and mechanical characteristics.

Oak wood is characterized by excellent resistance to compression and bending, to attacks by fungi and molds and to the agents of time. It is an extremely versatile wood that lends itself very well to the creation of parquet and wood coverings also due to the ease with which it can be colored, treated and bleached.

Types

From a commercial point of view, there are three types of oak, sharing the same technological characteristics and uses. They are distinguished according to their origin:

  • American oak, which includes American white oak (Quercus alba) and American red oak (Quercus rubra), which, as the name implies, differ in color.
  • European oak, which like the American oak includes white oak (Quercus robur instead of alba) and red oak (Quercus rubra).
  • Japanese oak, which includes Quercus myrsinifolia and Quercus glauca.

For oak intended for parquet, we have the following varieties:

  • Natural oak, a classic that never sets.
  • Brushed oak, with the grain in relief.
  • Sandblasted oak, the right balance between classic and modern.
  • Bleached oak, is the most popular because it allows you to create bright and sunny environments.
  • Antique oak, with warm and traditional colors.

Uses

It is a highly valued wood for its many positive characteristics and lends itself to various uses. The main ones are:

  • Construction of fine and long-lasting furniture.
  • Construction of small boats.
  • Construction of fine barrels for aging wines.
  • Construction of load-bearing structures in buildings.

Realization of

  • Firewood, produces a high amount of heat and a low smoke density.

Pros and Cons

Based on the characteristics we have already seen, oak has numerous advantages and the only "defect" that we would like to point out is the fairly high cost which, however, is repaid over time thanks to the numerous qualities. Let's summarize the main ones: High hardness and toughness, see the characteristics. High resistance to bad weather and atmospheric agents, see the characteristics. Good durability, see the features. Medium high price. Pay particular attention to parquet which, despite being very resistant, is not free from scratches and dents.

Curiosity

Oak plants have a very long life as they can live up to 500 years. They contain "tannin", a liquid that gives the oak barrels a much appreciated aroma and allows the wood to resist the fermentation of musts, during transformation into wine.

Oak grows in European and Asian temperate forests and in the old continent, most of the oak used comes from both France and Eastern European countries, such as Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia or Albania. However, oak is much more common on the hilly and mountain slopes of Western Europe, particularly in Italy, it is found in the Alpine and pre-Alpine valleys, or in the woods.

Useful Tips

The ideal temperature for storing parquet is 15/25 ° C. The humidity rate, on the other hand, must remain between 45 and 60%. For the daily cleaning of furniture and artifacts, a dusting with a soft cotton rag is sufficient. For a more thorough cleaning, aimed at eliminating stains, fingerprints and halos, wipe with a well-wrung leather cloth after having soaked it in warm water with a few drops of white vinegar and rinse at the end by passing the cloth after having soaked it in water only. Wax sticks can be used for minor repairs of cracks and abrasions.
