Beech Wood: Characteristics and Applications
Heavy and robust
Beech wood is one of the most resistant woods. It is not very waterproof and for this reason it is used for interiors (floors, furniture, walls). The beech leaf bath is a good remedy for insomnia. Beech transmits tolerance, creative and vital power, order, clarity, calculability and overall vision. Beech wood also goes very well with other types of wood, transmits positive energy and, thanks to these virtues, it is ideal for decorating places where work activities take place
the beech wood used for this production is evaporated in special ovens to make it soft and elastic. In the oven, the beech is not only evaporated and dried to reduce the percentage of humidity between 12 and 15%.
During the processing of the slats the percentage of humidity is further reduced, obtaining a dimensionally stable product.
The porosity of the beech wood allows the impregnating resins of the motors and transformers to penetrate the wood and cement it. The evaporated beech slats, if suitably impregnated, are classified in the thermal class of impregnating material. Due to their dielectric and mechanical characteristics, the evaporated beech slats are suitable for the insulation of electric motors as a closure of the quarry, for the insulation of transformers and for all those uses where shims or supports are required.

Beech wood is widely used in the construction of furniture and interior furnishings:
It is widespread in all European forests and in France, so much so that its leaf was chosen as the symbol of the XVI Winter Olympic Games in Albertville.
- chairs (mainly in bent wood),
- veneers and plywood (also folded plywood
- stairs and parquet (with strips and mosaic)
- toys
- kitchen utensils
- brushes and parts of tools
- packaging such as fruit crates
- production of cellulose (from which textile fibers are subsequently obtained)
- production of wood panels
- firewood, as well as for the production of charcoal
Pros and cons of beech wood:
It has particular mechanical, structural and aesthetic characteristics that enhance its strengths and weaknesses. It is a light colored wood, tending to blond, extremely delicate. It is a thick and heavy wood, which over time retains characteristics of solidity and resistance. It is a ductile material for processing, abundant in nature, cheap and durable, but particularly sensitive to the attack of many animals such as parasites and woodworms.
From a mechanical point of view, it is a rather hard wood, particularly resistant to traction, bending, compression and torsion operations. It is a hard wood, resistant to external stresses, therefore durable. However, it is to be considered a very sensitive wood to humidity: if kept in humid environments for a long period of time, it tends to deform, and to undergo visible structural alterations. Aesthetically, beech wood looks like a light wood, which varies from copper blonde to reddish brown.
Its veins are significant, and highlighted in different ways according to the shades of color, which also vary in relation to the light. The beech wood has a marked porosity, a regular grain, which is not visible to the naked eye which makes it lighter, especially during processing. The characteristics of this wood are its resistance, its compactness, its durability, its beauty and versatility, which meet with its remarkable distribution, and its lightness, qualities that make the beech highly rated for its construction. of different design elements.
On the other hand, beech wood also has negative characteristics, such as a strong sensitivity to humidity, a tendency to distort, a not very strong aesthetic, with little impact, compared to other similar types of wood. It is a wood that has positive mechanical properties: it is prone to cutting, in fact it is soft and malleable in the assembly and reconstruction phases; bends to sawing, folding, planing, and finishing operations.
It is a resistant wood, so it does not tend to bend naturally, but it does bend when subjected to steaming operations. It is a wood that, like most, lends itself well to both assembly and operations that alter its aesthetic structure, such as varnishing and painting. Beech wood is very versatile, useful for building tools, dressers, furniture, wooden objects, fixtures, musical instruments. Beech is a wood used for heating, so the parts not used for finishing and construction are destined for this sector.

Other uses
Versatile and functionalThe beech is grown in coppice woods for the production of firewood (excellent fuel), however in recent years there has been a conversion from coppice to high forest to satisfy commercial interest. In high forest crops, cuts are made every 90-100 years, from which 400-500 cubic meters of cut timber are obtained.
As a timber it is used in the construction of furniture, toys, kitchen utensils and is suitable for turning. Thanks to its compactness it is also appreciated in the construction of chairs, mallets, floors and work bench tops.
Among the best known ornamental varieties we remember the Fagus sylvatica var. purpurea Ait. with wine-red leaves, and Fagus silvatica var. pendula with a majestic posture, with long drooping branches, with leaves with iridescent reflections, bright red or speckled with white and bordered with red.
Legno di Castagno: Caratteristiche e Applicazioni
Leggero e resistente

Paleria: Da sempre a servizio dell’uomo
- Tutori e recinzioni: diametro 2-15 cm, lunghezza 1-2 m

Altri impieghi Versatile e funzionale
